What is Early Intervention?

A family centered program for children, birth to school age, with special needs or at risk for     developmental delay.

A team of parents and professionals who work together to design services that are responsive to     family identified priorities and needs.

An opportunity for parents to gain knowledge to make informed decisions.

The understanding of developmental needs of children and incorporating these into the family's     daily routine and the services available.

A place where family to family support and networking is encouraged. Offers high quality     professional services in the form of developmental assessment, intervention and     recommendations.

What Can We Offer?

Together with the parent and other professionals, an individual program is developed. This program is designed to fit the child and families daily routine. Regular visits take place at home, daycare, or within the community. Visits are scheduled at the family's convenience.

We also provide:

      Advocacy and Support
      Referrals to Other Services
      Co-visits with other professionals
      Resource/Toy Lending Library
      Playgroup (as scheduled)
      Family support contacts
Transition to daycare, school and community programs
Support for involvement in community activities.

Why?

The preschool years are the most important years of any child's development. Early intervention can assist families to meet their needs through a supportive family-centered approach which helps to foster their child's development.

Benefits:

Families gain an understanding of how to help their children learn and develop through play.
Families also become familiar with activities and materials that meet their child's level of     development.
Families learn about thecommunity resources and services available to them.
Children gain and improve developmental skills, helping them reach their potential.
      Opportunities to meet other families.

How Can You Get Involved?

Referrals may be made by parents, professionals, or others with the parent's permission.

Participation in the program is voluntary and there is no fee.

The Antigonish Guysborough Early Childhood Intervention Program is directed by a local volunteer     board with representation from Antigonish and Guysborough Counties. Funding is provided by the     Department of Community Services as well as fund raising activities in the communities.
