The Annapolis County Adult Residential Centre (AC ARC) is a 34 bed, licensed Home for Special Care. The AC ARC provides a supportive, home-like living environment to people with intellectual disabilities and/or long term mental health challenges. Clients who live at the AC ARC are given opportunities to participate in programs which address vocational, recreational, learning and life skills needs.

Vocational supports are offered to clients through in-house jobs, project 50 jobs, and through community partners such as Carleton Road Industries Association. CRIA is an Adult Vocational Centre that provides vocational and life skills training at their workshop in Lawrencetown.

Clients at the AC ARC have access to a wide variety of recreational opportunities. The AC ARC has a 19 passenger bus which is used to take clients on various outings such as bowling, the beach, picnics, the Lawrencetown Exhibition, and Special Olympic events. Clients also have access to an activity room which boasts a fireplace and an entertainment centre with a Wii system. The AC ARC also has a games room for clients who enjoy playing pool, foosball, table tennis, and darts.

Learning and life skills needs are addressed through each client's individualized program.

The AC ARC also administers two satellite services: the Supervised Apartments and the Community Support Services Program. These services give client's access to a broad range of supports and programs.

The Supervised Apartments offers 24 hour professional support and consists of three apartments which accommodate eight clients. People who live at the apartments all participate in individualized vocational programs and must be willing to establish learning goals for themselves. The objective of the Supervised Apartments is to facilitate the continued personal growth and development of each client.

The Community Support Services provide staff support to adults with intellectual disabilities or long term mental health challenges who live in the community. Its goal is to offer support and advocacy through teaching and/or assistance with the activities of daily living. Clients are offered support with their personal, social, vocational and educational skill development, and benefit from opportunities provided through community living. Clients in this program also receive 24 hour professional telephone support through the AC ARC.

Referrals for admission to all of these programs come from the Department of Community Services. For more information on the programs, or how to apply, please contact the nearest office of the Nova Scotia Department of Community Services.
