Strategies for Effective Implementation

With so many assistive technology (AT) products available, what is the"right" one. The right product depends on individual needs, the specific setting, and the particular task(s) to be accomplished. A tool that may be a great aid for one person may not be helpful to another.

Determined by a Program Planning Process

  • What are the challenges the individual faces (reading, writing, organizational)?
  • Research, network and visit others who may be using similar technology.
  • Consider a range and combination of technology options. (no-tech/low tech/high tech)
  • Discussions with Technical and Curriculum consultants.
  • Question usefulness and practicality of applications (SETT Framework).
  • Explore other accommodations (no tech) solutions.
  • Try technology prior to purchasing whenever possible.
  • Will the individual use it in real life/curriculum applications?
  • Will it work for the individual and achieve outcomes?
Matching technology solutions to the individual user
  • Are the individual's challenges and particular needs being assessed or indicated?
  • Introduce technology to the individual for ongoing evaluation and effectiveness.
  • Is it easy to learn? Is the individual comfortable with it?
  • Does it enhance the individual's strengths?
  • Can the individual use this technology independently?
  • How effective is it? Is it affordable and cost-effective?
  • Is it portable and usable in a variety of settings?
  • Is it robust and easy for the individual to troubleshoot?
  • Ensure that it can "grow" with the individual's needs.
  • An individual may require more than one tool to complete tasks in different settings.
Trial period to confirm effectiveness and fine-tune the implementation
  • Encourage use in all curriculum areas as possible.
  • Is it compatible with other software the individual is using?
  • Encourage ways to become a useful tool for the individual in their subject/specialist area.
  • Continually assess the situation and monitor progress.
  • Team meetings can determine the individual/staff needs, enhancements or modifications.
  • Is it working for the individual and are outcomes being achieved?
Access to Technical Support
  • Purchase from a reputable source that offers expertise and technical support.
  • Are there required hardware upgrades?
  • Collaborate with the network administrator.
Training for Student and Staff
  • Introduction to the individual with training and support considerations.
  • Teaching staff in-serviced and trained.
  • Provide support notes and reading material for all staff concerned.
  • Provide time for staff to gain hands-on experience.
