Established in February 1996, the Bright Beginnings Early Intervention Program consisted of a group of volunteers concerned over inadequate, nonexistent and poorly coordinated services offered to families of special needs children. In Annapolis County these barriers placed developmentally delayed children at risk for not maximizing their learning potential.

With incorporation in March 1998, the society pursued the development of an early intervention program and eventually received financial support from the Department of Community Services. While awaiting the decision, the society obtained a grant from the Department of Health's Community Health Promotion Fund. With the grant, a Resource Center was founded in Bridgetown that offered a toy and book library staffed by society members.

With the hiring of a full-time Program Coordinator/Early Interventionist in October 1999, the Resource Center moved to Lawrencetown. The program expanded beyond the library service to include home visits and presentations. Presentations were completed to help increase public awareness and understanding of developmental delays/disabilities and their impact on families. A more detailed account of what the program currently offers can be found by following the 'services' link at the top of this page.

This project is sponsored by the Board of Directors of the Bright Beginnings Early Intervention Program (BBEIP). The Board is comprised of parents, professionals (e.g., teachers, speach-language therapist, psychologist, etc...) and other community members. All these individuals are full participants in decision making related to all aspects of the planning, implementation and evaluation stages of this program. BBEIP sees itself as a full partner with other community agencies and works with them in an integrated and coordinated manner.

Any interested citizens are encouraged to become a member of BBEIP. Members are provided with the oppourtunity to be involved within the board, a committee and/or have a voice at the annual general meeting.
