COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES STUDENT SERVICES

If a student suffers a loss of a family member or friend, or is grieving a previous loss, the student services provide support for the student in several ways. The student can be counselled by the student services staff, evaluated to determine their needs and will be referred if necessary to other types of support and/or counselling. The student services staff are also there to provide links with peer counselling and support.

FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRES

Family resource centres provide excellent support and resources for families in need. Many centres have support groups set up within the centre as well as having books, pamphlets, and videos on the different topics of bereavement. Check phone book for a centre in the local area.

FRIENDS IN BEREAVEMENT

Many have learned from personal experience that the journey through grief is often long, painful, lonely and frightening. Recognising that there are countless people in every community who are suffering as the result of the death, or approaching death, of a loved one, and that adequate support is often not available, a support group was begun in February 1993. Although we are at many different stages in our grieving, each of us has suffered the loss of one or more significant people in our lives. We are men and women of all ages, from different communities and backgrounds, who come together for support as we work through our losses. Some start coming soon after their loss has occurred while others come long after, realising that old grief wounds have never begun to heal. Meetings are held at the Kentville Baptist Church. 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month, 2-4pm.
