PICTOU COUNTY GRIEF SUPPORT

Grief Support in Pictou County is available to anyone who has experienced a loss. These groups are sponsored by the Pictou County Council of Churches. Contact Father Sydney (Syd) Mifflen for the location of a group in the local area.

SCHOOL BOARDS

The school board, through a variety of means, is willing, prepared and able to offer support in time of bereavement. A family may have lost a child who was a student, a student may be grieving and the school board has many ways in which they are able to help.

SCHOOL-BASED SUPPORT:

  • Crisis response intervention team members include administrators, teachers, school psychologists and perhaps other community members who will provide support and counselling to students, families and staff during times of crisis
SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS:
  • Consult with parents and teachers as necessary
  • Provide appropriate resource materials to teachers and parents
  • Provide liason with community mental health services and facilitate referrals as appropriate
A TEACHER'S GUIDE: HELPING CHILDREN COPE WITH
DEATH AND BEREAVEMENT
  • This guide is available to principals, etc. and may prove helpful to students and/or their families
  • Some schools also have guidance counsellors who provide support services to students, their families and staff
REGIONAL SUPPORT RESOURCES
  • Access to crisis response from personnel not attached to the school experiencing the crisis (e.g. other school psychologists or guidance personnel)
  • Resource materials for teachers re: how to deal with bereavement and materials to use with students to facilitate discussion about issues surrounding death and loss

Self-help groups provide emotional support and practical help in dealing with a problem common to all members. The Self Help Connection can help you find the right group for you, or a friend, or a family member. We maintain a province-wide directory of self-help groups. We can assist professionals looking for a self-help group for their clients.
