SUICIDE BEREAVEMENT

Those who are bereaved by a suicide experience a number of responses which are similar to those experienced as a result of death by other causes. In addition, there are a number of responses which are unique to suicide survivors. Survivors of suicide will experience the same general grief processes and must work on the same tasks in order to integrate their grief. However, the survivor may respond more intensely in certain areas. Guilt, anger, the search for an explanation, feeling of rejection, a sense of stigma, and suicidal thoughts and feelings may be increased for survivors. It is important to understand how these intensified responses can affect the survivors' grief experience.
