BEREAVED FAMILIES OF CAPE BRETON

Bereaved Families of Cape Breton is a registered non-profit organization that was established in 1990 to serve Industrial Cape Breton. It was formed by local social workers, clergy, palliative care workers and bereaved persons who identified the need to support those who have experienced the death of a loved one. Bereaved Families also acts as a resource in educating the public to cope with and understand the grieving process, and prepare individuals to facilitate and lead Grief Recovery Groups. In addition to Grief Groups, support and share nights are held regularly at varying locations throughout CBRM.

COLCHESTER BEREAVED PROGRAM

When bereaved persons reach out to share their feelings of confusion, anger, sadness and guilt, and when they reach out for support and understanding, they need to be received by persons who understand the depth and complexities of what they are feeling.

COLCHESTER CHILDREN'S BEREAVEMENT GROUP

The purpose of the group is to provide a safe, supportive, and consistent environment for children to share their loss and grief with peers. It also tries to support normal grief responses and promote healthy coping mechanisms, while having fun. It is designed for children between 5-12 years old who are grieving the loss through death of a parent or sibling. Children will have the opportunity to share the experience of healthy grieving with their peers. This is not a therapy group. Professional staff and trained volunteers lead each session. There is an advisory committee and a referral process in place for children who need grief counselling.
There will be eight weekly sessions, each lasting 1.5 hrs. Each session has an underlying theme, which will be evident in the discussions and the activities chosen.

Contact: If you would like further information, or would like to refer a child to the group, please call 893-5554 ext. 2283. A facilitator will return your call as soon as possible.
