Cape Breton Community Respite
The Cape Breton Community Respite Program came into being in the fall of 1997 as a pilot project
when the Society for Treatment of Autism (N.S.) was granted an extension of their services. It
became a full-fledged program in the summer of 1999, making respite services available to families
residing in Cape Breton who are providing ongoing care to children under 19 years with moderate
to severe developmental delay.
Statement
Cape Breton Community Respite Program exists to offer respite to families who have children with
a developmental disorder living in Cape Breton. It is recognised that these families have unique
stresses beyond that of other families raising children. It is also accepted that children with
a developmental disorder have the same basic needs as other children, including the need for
acceptance. Cape Breton Community Respite offers children the opportunity to participate and be
accepted in their community while giving parents a well-deserved break.
