Home-based care: respite worker may provide care in child’s home, or
take child on recreational outings in the community.
May refer families, if requested, to other support agencies to benefit
the family.
Summer Respite: Fully-screened, capable workers available to
care for children during July and August.
Parents ultimately decide who will work with their child, and in which
activities their child will take part (Respite Co-ordinator will help families
develop a respite care plan).
·
A successful
worker referral results in lower stress levels for the family; this, in turn,
has a positive effect on children, often resulting in a reduction of
inappropriate or aggressive behaviours.
·
Parents are
empowered because they are ultimately responsible to choose their own worker;
the person with whom they and their child are most comfortable.
·
The program is
family-centred. The type of respite is
determined by the needs of the family.
Also, activities during respite care are pre-approved by parents.
·
Respite workers
often have experience and training and can help children with skills
development.
·
We meet with
families in their own environment (their home), and have the opportunity to
hear the family’s concerns in a more relaxed, natural setting.
