Parents ultimately decide who will work with their child, and in which activities their child will take part (Respite Co-ordinator will help families develop a respite care plan).

·         A successful worker referral results in lower stress levels for the family; this, in turn, has a positive effect on children, often resulting in a reduction of inappropriate or aggressive behaviours.

·         Parents are empowered because they are ultimately responsible to choose their own worker; the person with whom they and their child are most comfortable.

·         The program is family-centred.  The type of respite is determined by the needs of the family.  Also, activities during respite care are pre-approved by parents.

·         Respite workers often have experience and training and can help children with skills development.

·         We meet with families in their own environment (their home), and have the opportunity to hear the family’s concerns in a more relaxed, natural setting.
