History & Mission
History
In 1999 the Continuing Care Association of Nova Scotia (CCANS) evolved from its two earlier organizations: the Association of Licensed Nursing Homes (ALNH) and then Associated Homes for Special Care (AHSC). ALNH had its beginning in 1964 when eight licensed nursing homes formed a collective group under the Societies Act to promote standards of care in Long Term Care facilities throughout Nova Scotia. This association remained in existence under the name of ALNH until 1976 when this name no longer reflected the full scope of membership. To reflect the changing membership, ALNH restructured and in 1976 became incorporated under the Societies Act of Nova Scotia as Associated Homes for Special Care.
Presently, the Continuing Care Association of Nova Scotia represents the following types of Special Care Programs:
- Nursing homes
- Homes for the Aged
- Residential Care Facilities
- Adult Residential Centres
- Group Homes and Developmental Residences
- Small Options
- Supervised Apartments
- Home Support Organizations
These special care programs provide nursing care, personal care, supervisory and shelter needs for senior Nova Scotians as well as other individuals who are unable to live independently in their own home. Our facilities provide these services with respect for the individual resident's personal dignity by recognizing each person's rights and distinct psychological, physical, and spiritual needs. All of our Association member facilities are licensed and or approved by the Department of Community Services or Department of Health, and must maintain the standards of the Association to retain their membership.
Our Mission
"To provide leadership and direction in the field of Continuing Care for all Nova Scotians through education, by advocating on their behalf and by supporting Caregivers."
