Shirley was longtime resident of the Annapolis Valley who was suffering from leukemia. Her terminal illness took 9 years of her life - a great part of that time undergoing chemotherapy in Halifax. This meant many weeks away from her family and friends. When she was allowed out on a day pass, she found there was no place to go. It was Shirley's dream to establish a house where family members could stay at a reasonable cost The Lions Clubs of Nova Scotia were instrumental in establishing our initial "house", and we are pleased that we still receive some support from them. Lions form part of our Board of Directors as well as volunteers.
Shirley died on November 7, 1988.
It was necessary to build our own building which is located on the hospital property after our previous location in the Miller Hospital was closed down and subsequently demolished. Presently we are trying to pay down our construction costs and any help afforded to us is greatly appreciated. Our valued service is offered to everyone in need, to all citizens of Nova Scotia and sometimes as far away as the USA.
