Harbour House provides services to abused women.
Harbour House is a shelter for abused women with or without their children, serving Lunenburg and Queens Counties. We have been providing "in house" support services since October 1987. As well as our outreach program "reaches out" to women and children in the community, who many never have been a resident at Harbour House.
SHELTER SERVICES
- Counselling:
In person or by phone, allowing women, children and teens to be heard, explore options and make plans for their future.

- Advocacy:
Help gaining services from other agencies such as Legal Aid, Community Services, etc.
- Referrals:
If requested, to other agencies such as schools, mental health, housing, etc.
- Programs:
Weekly in-house programs to explore all issues of abuse and coping with life after leaving their situation.
- Support Groups:
A confidential, safe place for women to explore their choices and learn new skills.
- Provide:
Protection, safety, shelter, confidentiality and basic life necessities to women and children.

Women abuse in relationships is seldom a one-time event. Without intervention the abuse rarely stops.
Abuse can psychological, emotional, physical, spiritual, sexual, and/or economic.
Some examples are:
- calling you names, putting you down
- controlling what you do, where you go
- threatening to hurt you
- making you ask for money
- using anger, frustration, stress to justify his actions
- manipulating you
- slapping, grabbing, tripping, standing over you
OUTREACH SERVICES

- Workshops/Public Education:
Offered to community groups and schools to raise awareness of violence in our community.

In addition to financial support from the community, Harbour House is in needs of:
- household articles, dishes, linens, furniture, etc.
- nightgowns, pyjamas, slippers
- toiletries, personal items for women
- diapers, infant care products
- used clothing for women & children
- toys, games, puzzles, magazines
- craft items, yarn, etc.
- volunteers for a variety of tasks
within the house as well as house
and yard maintenance, general
trucking and fundraising.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?
- examine your own values and attitudes toward women, the family,
violence, etc. Be ready to listen and help if a friend or family member
needs you.
- learn your own rights and the rights of individuals
- learn more about family violence
- learn more about community resources
- make abuse an issue in your workplace or community group by
inviting speakers, running films and workshops.
- lobby government to continue funding transition houses and shelters
- work to change society's attitudes and other unacceptable behaviour
- share this information with a friend
- become a Harbour House volunteer
