THE HISTORY
Homes for Independent Living was founded by the Canadian Paraplegic Association in 1980. Homes for Independent Living was incorporated as a non –profit charitable organization to support individuals with physical disabilities; its focus on promoting independence and providing access to accessible housing in the community.
In 1982, the Oxford Street Learning Centre (OSCL) opened its doors to six participants to reside at the home and to go on to become the first OSLC graduates. These graduates became the first of many successful individuals to live independently in the community.
In 1997 HIL expanded its mission with the creation of the Community Outreach Program (the Outreach). This 1997 initiative eased the adjustments of the OSLC graduates entering the community by providing the follow-up and ongoing support from HIL staff while living in the community. HIL currently supports three individuals in the outreach program.
HIL currently has over 25 years assisting individuals with physical disabilities increase their level of independence. HIL has supported individuals that were born with their physical disability as well as individuals that acquired their disability through illness or accidents. HIL understands the need to access other support services in the community so that our participants can reach their highest level of independence.
Throughout the years we have gained a wide range of knowledge and skills that can assist individuals with physical disabilities gain skills and reach their goals. We have contact with various agencies that assist individuals with physical disabilities increase their skill level such as NS rehab, Tetra Society, CNIB, Spina Bifida Association, Independent Living Centre, Reach Ability and Workbridge.
