HOPE COTTAGE
Hope Cottage Planning Addition
The Board of Hope Cottage
has been working on the plans to expand the facilities at Hope Cottage
for the past two years. The steady increase in the numbers attending
Hope Cottage has led us to plan an addition to our existing facility.
The present building is too small; as well our kitchen is no longer adequate to handle the traffic. We have the plans prepared and are starting an archeological mitigation. The property, which is owned by the Archdiocese of Halifax, is large enough to accommodate an expansion on the back of the building. The Phase I Archeological study revealed that the original foundation for buildings on the property date back to 1751, two years after the founding of Halifax, thus the need for the second phase requiring the digging. The addition will allow us to sit 85 people in a single dinning area, and greatly improve our kitchen. The two small rooms in the front of the building will not be used for eating but will probably be utilized to allow people to gather prior to meals during inclement weather.
We are having tremendous support from the community as we plan this addition. The design has been done by architects Harvey and MacKenzie, along with in-put from Dumac Engineering, and the bulk of the Archeological work has been undertaken by Jacques Whitford of Halifax.
The process has been lengthy for a number of reasons. The first delay seems to have been the amalgamation of Halifax and Dartmouth. The next hurdle was to accommodate the requirements of the Heritage Committee. Given the age and history of the property, an Archeological Survey was required. To the delight of all concerned, nothing of interest was discovered and we are now in the process of applying for a building permit. Once the permit is received, the plan is to proceed immediately with construction. The intention is to build most of the addition before breaking through the present structure to minimize the disruption to the on-going operation. We will keep you updated to the development of this addition.
