BFI Comes to Hope Cottage's Help
The recent change in garbage pick-up
rules instituted by HRM left Hope Cottage, along with many other nonprofit
in a bind. As of September 1998, organizations like Hope Cottage
were grouped in the same category as businesses, and as a result, did not
receive curb side pick-up of its garbage. Hope Cottage and the others
(which includes groups like Adsum House, St. Patrick's Church, etc.) were
forced to contract to companies like BFI for regular pick-up of the garbage.
This required installation of a bin and a monthly fee of approximately
$150.00 (this figure would change based on the number of extra pick-ups
required). Hope Cottage, along with others, complained to HRM officials
that this was a financial burden and asked for support. After a few
months we received notice that BFI would continue to pick up the garbage,
but they would not be invoicing the cottage. Thanks and kudos to
Kurt Jacobs and BFI. |
1,000,000 Meals at
Hope Cottage
Hope Cottage reached a milestone in
September that makes all associated with the cottage both proud and saddened.
On one hand, serving a million meals is a fair accomplishment. On
the other hand, it signals the failure of our social programs in our region.
the event was marked on September 23, 1998, 27 years and two months after
Fr. Joe Mills opened the doors. It is quite apparent that the necessity
for the services offered by Hope Cottage are required now more than ever,
and the construction of an addition will make the job of staff and volunteers
easier, but will probably guarantee their jobs for some time to come |
