HOPE COTTAGE
The following is “a day in the life” of a few people who visit Hope Cottage on a regular basis:
Mark
Mark is a lab technician and
has been unemployed since he lost his job 18 months ago through “down sizing”.
He has been attending Hope Cottage for the past year. A typical day
in his life includes a 30 min. walk to Hope Cottage twice a day for meals,
which will account for 5 hours of his day to get two meals. He is
also expected to be actively looking for work. He makes a daily visit
to the employment office looking for prospective jobs. He does not
have access to a fax machine, or a computer to produce a c.v. Most
prospects in the Halifax area will be in places like Burnside or Bayers
Lake, given that he has no means of transportation, it will be a 1 1/ 2
hr walk to an interview.
In summary, Hope Cottage is many things to many people. To some it is an old building that we will be adding an addition to, to others a place to get a meal or two each day, to others a place of refuge from the daily grind and still to others a place to have a meal with friends and discuss the happenings of the day. Others view it as a sign of Hope and some our volunteers as a place to live out their faith according to the Gospels, finally others see Hope Cottage as the culmination of 27 years of failing social policies. No matter how you view Hope Cottage, it is clear that it will be with us for some time to come.
