WHAT IS EARLY INTERVENTION?

     A home-based support service for families of young children with special needs.

     A family-centered service providing families the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the     intervention program, keeping in mind that the family is an interactive unit.

     An opportunity for families to learn about a variety of community resources.

     An opportunity for parents to gain knowledge to make informed decisions.

     A partnership of parents and professionals designing and implementing programs based on the child     and family's uniqueness.


WHO CAN EARLY INTERVENTION HELP?

     Children from birth to school entry with a range of special needs such as Cerebral Palsy, Down      Syndrome, Spina Bifida, PDD/Autism, Attention Deficit Disorder, as well as children who are at      risk for developmental delay.

     Parents and professionals seeking support for children with special needs.

     Participation is voluntary and services are confidential.

     There is no fee for families to participate.

     Referrals may be made by parents or health care professionals, with the parent's permission.


WHAT SERVICES ARE OFFERED BY EARLY INTERVENTION?

     Regular visits to the child's home - a natural, supportive learning environment. Services may also be      extended into community-based programs such as Early Childhood Education Centres.

     Help in identifying goals and organizing resources.

     Activities designed to adapt to the family and child's daily routines.

     Resource lending library of printed materials, educational videos, toys and equipment.

     Family activities such as playgroups and family fun days.


HOW CAN FAMILIES PARTICIPATE?

     Participation is voluntary and services are confidential.

     There is no fee for families to participate.
