What is an Early Intervention Program?

  • Early Intervention is a home based program providing support to developmentally delayed children, children at risk of delay and their families. Early Intervention helps families meet their needs through a supportive family-oriented approach to learning and development.
What Services are Provided?
  • An Early Interventionist provides home visits to families on a weekly or bi-monthly basis to provide support and guidance on appropriate play activities which will aid in their child's development.

  • Families are given an opportunity to learn about community resources and issues related to child development and various disabilities which may enable them to become advocates for themselves and their children.

  • Families are given access to a toy lending library and books related to child development.

  • Participation in the program is voluntary.

Who Does the Program Serve?

  • Families with children between the ages of birth and school age who have been diagnosed with a developmental delay or are at risk of a delay. The delay or risk may be related to such conditions as Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Prematurity, Birth Complications or Congenital Illness.

How are Services Obtained?

  • Referrals to the program can be made by parent(s), doctors, educators, health professionals and others with the permission of the parent(s).

Why Early Intervention?

  • The early years of life are considered to be crucial opportunities for learning and development. Progress made during these years can benefit a child later in life.
Is There A Charge for Service?
  • Early Intervention services are provided free to families. Depending upon the existing caseload, families may be placed on a wait list and accepted when an opening in the program becomes available.

How is the Program Funded?

  • Funding for Early Intervention Programs is provided by the Provincial Department of Community Services and through local community fundraising.
What Areas are Provided with this Service?
  • Services are provided to families residing in Pictou County.
