About Us Mission Statement
To provide sport training and competitive opportunities for athletes with a mental disability in the Dartmouth Region.
In early 2001, Nova Scotia Special Olympics decided the Capital Area (Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and Sackville) had progressed to a size that was too largeto service the current needs of over 200 athletes. Due to the size of the Organization there was little to no growth potential for additional athletes.
On March 1st, 2001, the Special Olympics Dartmouth was formed, encompassing the areas of Dartmouth, Eastern Passage and Porter's Lake, with the responsibility of providing programs to service over 75 registered athletes.
- To establish an operational executive committee to oversee programs
- To identify individuals to organize various sports services
- To set up and implement serveral sports programs, including: bowling, track and field, swimming, soccer, softball, floor hockey, and skating.
- To offer these programs to individual age groups, i.e. ages 13 to 29 and 30 and above
- To establish a youth program for ages 5 to 13
- To expand services to more athletes in our geographic area
- To increase the profile and community awareness of Special Olympics Dartmouth through presentations, bulletin boards, fund raisers, web pages, etc
- To establish operating budgets to include initial start up costs and annual funds required for the sports programs
