Adaptations That Can be Made in the Classroom
General Adaptations
- non-slip surfaces
- various size drawing utensils
- adapted scissors
- rearrange floor space for wheelchair accessibility
- use slant tables to improve visual field and provide more appropriate mobility and
stability.
- a variety of materials: velcro, tempo loop, floam, etc. for quick adaptations
To emphasize language and beginning literacy, augmentative communication in a variety
of forms should be available.
- voice output communication devices/switches
- communication boards / schedule boards
- sign language gestures -pictures / props
- interactive story boards
- access to vocabulary to comment and ask questions
- a variety of written communication tools
Considerations for the Physical Room Environment
- adequate floor space
- mounted grab railings throughout room
- consistent arrangement of room for visually impaired learners
- shelves arranged so children unable to stand can independently obtain materials
- consider seating adaptations: couch, captains chairs with arms, cube chairs or
beanbags to provide necessary support for students
- placement of the student in relationship to activities. (eye level placement of
materials) also placement of staff during activities
- bathroom accessibility: consider light switch extensions, a motion sensor for sink
faucets, type of seating on toilet
- lighting issues such as noise and glare.
Environmental Considerations
- set up the environment to encourage cooperation and socialization
- augmentative communication made available promotes language development for
all students
- model use of communication boards so students see it is meaningful
- pair written words with pictures
- eliminate all possible visual and auditory distractions.
- use daily schedules to help students organize themselves and assist in transitions

- clear ziploc backs and bags with handles to store overlays and materials
- make sure all pieces of equipment, props and cables are labeled
- use a zip or jaz drive to set up individualized student files and activities and to
back up data
- label each piece of equipment with brief instruction for operation
- minimize visual and auditory distractions for students
- clear storage boxes for thematic or adapted materials
- label everything in your room with a picture and written word
- use virus protection on all computers
- all equipment and software is labeled as your classrooms and inventoried
- all registration and warranty cards are returned for technical support and upgrade
