Preface

START is an integrated team approach to assistive technology intervention and support for AVRSB. Building upon a stronger foundation of knowledge while encouraging greater professional development, networking and resource dissemination. Through fostering creativity and problem-solving strategies assistive technology can be more effective tools and bridge any gaps between technology and students with special needs. Development of a lead team focused on assistive technology in education within Student Services AVRSB, START has facilitated the following:

  • Assistive Technology Support
The START approach has created several AVRSB resources for AT. Through professional development and a creative team approach AT is in reality a part of the very work Student Services staff conducts in supporting students with special needs.

  • Assistive Technology Guide
The purpose of the guide is to assist educators in AVRSB for developing greater knowledge base and awareness of AT possibilities for students and provide a mechanism to receive support.

  • AT Toolboxes
START members have a resource of possible software and hardware adaptations and simple low technology solutions.

  • IPP Pro

  • Partnerships
Since 1999, the Technical Resource Centre of the Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre has facilitated professional development for the START members. The TRC has empowered and encouraged Student Services staff to explore AT tools.
