Southwest Early Childhood Intervention Program
    The Southwest Early Childhood Intervention Program provides specialized services and support to the families of young children with special needs or developmental delays, in order to promote their development.

    The program offers services and support to families of children from birth to school entry, who reside in Yarmouth County. Referrals are welcome from any source, providing parents/guardians give their consent to the referral being made. This service is available in both French and English.

    Children may be referred to the program if they have developmental delays, or are at risk for developmental delay. Some examples of diagnoses or risk factors include:
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Birth Complications
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Down Syndrome
  • Genetic Conditions/Syndromes
  • Global Developmental Delay
  • Prematurity
  • Sensory Disturbance (Vision/Hearing)
  • Speech-Language Disorder
  • Spina Bifida
    Participation is voluntary and there is no fee, as the program is a non-profit organization. Partial funding is provided through the NS Department of Community Services, with the remaining funds being obtained by fundraising activities and donations. The program is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

    A family-centered approach to service delivery is used. Services may include:
  • Home Visits
  • Accompanied Clinical Visits
  • Referrals to appropriate services
  • Toy Lending Library
  • Resource Lending Library
  • Assistance with Preschool/School Transitions

    Who is eligible? children residing within Yarmouth County, who are between birth and school entry, who have a developmental delay of 6 months or more in two or more areas of development, or are at-risk for delay due to an established diagnosis or biological risk (ie. premature birth, birth complications, sensory disorders)

    There is currently no waiting list.

    Southwest Early Childhood Intervention is a member of the Early Intervention Association of Nova Scotia.
